Partnering With Our Schools

Donations to the Partnering with our Schools category support the eight public schools within the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership. Employee gifts support Duke-coordinated pre-kindergarten, literacy and Latino youth outreach programs at these schools, along with a variety of quality projects created and approved by school-based committees of teachers, principals and parents.

Lakewood Montessori Middle School opened in Fall 2011 and is new to the Duke-Durham Neighborhood Partnership. Already Duke employee donations are supporting the Enlaces Latino youth outreach program, and future projects will be determined by the school's teachers, principals and parents.

1. Summer Learning in the Media Center, which supports and increases student reading during the summer months
2. Enhanced Writing with Multimodal Digital Media, which allowed students to share their writing skills using contemporary modes such as podcasts, commercials, documentaries and PSAs
3. Publishing Student Memoirs, whereby students edited one another's "Going on 15" memoirs for publication in a bound paperback book
4. Hooked on Books, an ongoing support network designed to increase the ability and desire to read among African-American and Latino male students

4. Real-World Math Lessons, which encourages connections between students' lessons and the real world with the Scholastic News MATH series
