This July, Triangle nonprofits are invited to apply for a Duke Community Care Fund grant.

The Community Care Fund is a competitive grantmaking program funded by Duke employee donations to Doing Good in the Neighborhood, Duke’s year-round employee giving campaign. The application process is open July 1, 2018 through July 25, 2018 for nonprofits that serve Durham, Orange and/or Wake counties.

Nonprofits must submit a Community Care Fund grant application, which is then reviewed by a committee of 18 Duke University and Duke University Health System employees. Grant awards will be announced in early November, and the maximum amount of funding that can be awarded per grant is $5,000.

Nonprofits must meet certain eligibility requirements, and their project proposal must align with one of the six Community Care Fund themes based on community priorities set by Durham, Wake and Orange County governments:

  • Affordable Housing
  • Child Development & Education
  • Environment & Sustainability
  • Food Access & Education
  • Healthy Communities
  • Young Adult Empowerment & Education

To learn more about the themes and eligibility criteria, as well as submit an application through the Community Care Fund online grant portal July 1 through July 25, visit the Duke Doing Good in the Neighborhood website.

The Doing Good in the Neighborhood campaign as well as the Community Care Fund grantmaking program are organized by the Duke Office of Durham and Regional Affairs. In 2017, the Duke office received 120 Community Care Fund applications, and a Community Care Fund Review Committee of 18 Duke employees ultimately awarded a total of $146,876 to 58 Triangle nonprofits.

Fifty-two percent of the Triangle nonprofits that applied in 2017 did not receive a grant. Every year, the number of employee donations to Doing Good in the Neighborhood’s Community Care Fund giving category directly impacts the number of organizations that are able to receive funding.

To help respond to this community need, Duke employees can make a donation to the Community Care Fund year-round. Staff and faculty can choose to make an ongoing contribution or a one-time gift through payroll deduction or through the Duke giving website. Learn more at doinggood.duke.edu/how-to-donate.
