About: Bull City Fit (BCF) is the community outreach arm of the Healthy Lifestyles Clinic, a multidisciplinary obesity treatment clinic for children in the 95th percentile for weight. In response to families confiding in providers that they lacked safe places to play and be active, Healthy Lifestyles formed a partnership with Durham Parks and Recreation in 2009 and BCF was born. Open six days a week year-round, BCF provides free fitness and nutrition programming for patients of Healthy Lifestyles and their families. It is BCF’s mission to create a safe, supportive and fun space for the low-income, high-risk families in our community to practice the healthy lifestyle changes promoted in clinic.
2017-18 DGIN funding will help cover deliveries of fresh food provided by Farmer Foodshare to Bull City Fit families, as well as cover supplemental ingredients and supplies for cooking classes using produce delivered to BCF. About 65 percent of Bull City Fit’s families are on Medicaid, so cost is a barrier hindering access to fresh food for many.
