About: Founded in 1995, Citizen Schools seeks to close opportunity and achievement gaps for children in low-income communities. Through a combination of school-based programs and national evaluation and policy initiatives, Citizen Schools has helped tens of thousands of students develop the skills, beliefs and relationships they need to succeed in middle school, high school and beyond.
2017-18 DGIN funding helps cover the costs of front-line staff members who work side by side with volunteers, students and teachers in the classroom. A Campus Director oversees all program operations and is the direct liaison to the school principal. She also manages Team Leaders and volunteers. Citizen Schools’ Team Leaders work side by side with the volunteers to lead apprenticeships for groups of 12-15 students throughout the year. All Campus Directors and Team Leaders have a college degree and prior youth development or teaching experience.
