About: Founded in 1995, Citizen Schools seeks to close opportunity and achievement gaps for children in low-income communities. Through a combination of school-based programs and national evaluation and policy initiatives, Citizen Schools has helped tens of thousands of students develop the skills, beliefs and relationships they need to succeed in middle school, high school and beyond.
2018-19 DGIN Funding will support the continuation of Citizen Schools’ Durham apprenticeship program in the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. Working alongside volunteer experts, called “Citizen Teachers”, students will complete hands-on, semester-long projects that reinforce core skills in a real-world context. Apprenticeships are designed to develop the four 21st-century skills of communication, collaboration, innovation, and problem solving.
