About: Girls on the Run was founded in 1996 with the goal of helping young girls recognize their extraordinary potential and thrive in a world that often sends them unhealthy and unrealistic messages. The Girls on the Run of the Triangle Council was founded in 2000 and serves Durham, Orange and Wake Counties. Since the Triangle nonprofit’s inception, more than 13,000 girls have participated in its life-changing physical activity, positive youth development (PA-PYD) program for girls in grades 3-8 designed to develop and enhance their social, psychological, and physical competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. The nonprofit’s mission is to create a world full of joyful, healthy and confident girls acting on their values and opportunities.
2017-18 DGIN funding will help provide scholarships for girls to participate in the inaugural Heart & Sole character development program at James E. Shepard Magnet Middle School, an IB school located in Durham, in spring 2018.
