About: LEAP began in 2008 as a volunteer effort at several local churches to tutor adults and school-aged children. In 2012, LEAP created its first preK class. In 2013, LEAP became an independent nonprofit organization. In 2015, LEAP opened its second preK site: the EDCI/LEAP Academy. LEAP has grown beyond its original mission of serving only Latino children. In 2013, the board of directors approved the following mission statement: Believing in the potential of all children, LEAP empowers Latino and other children in Durham to achieve academic success by providing a high-quality preschool and ongoing support through middle school.
2018-19 DGIN Funding will support a part-time gardening consultant who will be responsible for creating and maintaining the gardens (indoors and out), the materials (e.g. the compost) and, working with the teachers to relate activities to the curriculum.
