About: North Carolina Arts in Action helps children reach their full potential using performing arts as the catalyst to build focus, discipline, self-esteem, teamwork and leadership. Active in Durham, Orange, Wake and Chatham schools, it utilizes an award-winning pedagogy to help children develop 21st century skills that carry over into all aspects of their lives. NC AIA is a 16-week in-school program that reaches 1,000 fourth grade students at 10 underserved elementary schools, with the entire fourth grade population participating, including special needs students. It also involves 400 additional students from kindergarten through fifth grade who attend the in-school performances at each school.
2017-18 DGIN funding will help cover salary costs of teaching artist teams for underserved children at Holt Elementary School. Teaching Artist teams consist of a lead teacher/choreographer, an assistant teacher and a musician, who lead groups of dancers for the program in each fourth grade class.
