DGIN recently funded these programs:
Grow – A summer program for students who are in Pre-K and about to attend kindergarten at Watts. The program runs Monday through Wednesday. Students participate in basic literacy activities that include Montessori themes.
Remediation/Support Tutoring – An extended-day opportunity for students to access remediation and support in literacy and math. The sessions provide an extra four hours per week of small group and individual instruction. The students are encouraged to take risks with their academic behaviors and in turn gain confidence.
Afterschool Reading Academy – For first- and second-grade students reading behind grade level, this program provides 20 weeks of engaging afterschool literacy support from trained teachers and Duke tutors. The program goal is for each of those students to reach reading proficiency by the end of their third-grade year.
Peaceful Planet – With support from DGIN and SunTrust Bank, George Watts Montessori collaborated with Morehead Montessori to implement a 5-week summer program for rising second- and third-grade students. This unique, teacher-created program had three overarching goals: align interventions for struggling readers that occur during the school year with a summer program, provide enrichment experiences for students, and engage parents and community members.
